Crumbs Brewery

We were delighted to have the opportunity to quiz the husband and wife duo, Morgan and Elaine Arnell who are Crumbs Brewing.  Morgan gave us some answers, a little background information and some really interesting facts.

We set up Crumbs Brewing in 2017 after having spent many years working in the corporate world helping brands create ideas for new products. We wanted to do something for ourselves in our local community that had a positive, sustainable purpose at the heart of it.

I've had a life long love of beer and worked for several alcohol companies in my career so it was a good place to start. In researching ideas, we came across a brewery in Belgium that had made a name for themselves exploring and rediscovering old brewing techniques - one of which was brewing with beer (something that has been around since pre-Egyptian times). At the same time, we came across the shocking statistic that 44% of bread made in the UK never gets eaten. It’s the second most wasted household food item and also suffers from high levels of wastage in the production process.  An idea was born - use leftover bread to brew beer!V

Brewed using Chalk Hills bakery Surrey Bloomer loaves – a sweet, delicious loaf with real maltiness. Our Amber Lager is based on a Vienna Lager recipe – refreshing with a deliciously malty finish.

An idea was born - use leftover bread to brew beer!

We live in Reigate and were regular customers of Chalk Hills. We loved their bread and hugely respected the brand they had built, so it was an obvious first business to take our idea to. Sure enough, Chalk Hills suffer with managing food waste just like any other baker. Their two shops may have loaves left on the shelves at the end of the day and the variable demand of their wholesale business means that there was always a certain level of waste. Chris and Rosie did give most of their waste to the local farmer but that seemed such a shame, for such a high quality artisan product

Turning it into beer retains the value of the bread. Indeed, one of the things that sets us apart from some of the other brewers that have started brewing with bread is that we really care about the quality of the bread that goes into our brews. Each beer is made with one variety of loaf - that way the style of the beer reflects the style of the bread that makes it. It might be waste but that doesn’t mean quality isn’t important

Our range of beers are all quite different, just like the loaves that make them. Our Sourdough Pale Ale (made with sourdough bread just in case you hadn’t guessed) is a light and zesty session ale and our best seller in the summer. At the other end of the scale our strong and dark Rye Coffee Porter not only uses unsold rye bread in the brew but also uses left over coffee grounds from the bakery coffee machines. It’s very complex and a beer we are very proud of.

A fabulous treat for someone who can handle their spice!
Brewed using, zesty Sourdough loaves that make it a really refreshing beer. Late hops enhance the aroma but don’t overpower with bitterness. A perfect session pale ale.

We’ve saved over 35,000 loaves from being wasted through our work with Chalk Hills alone. That’s not only reducing food waste but also reducing our need for newly grown malts in our brews. As food production is one of the biggest contributors to climate change we are definitely trying to do our bit!

We sell direct to consumers via our website and supply a great selection of farm shops, deli’s and independent pubs and restaurants in the Surrey and South East area. We’ve always loved popping into Kingfisher as customers. They have such a great selection, including bread from our partners Chalk Hills obviously, so they were a great fit for Crumbs. Recently we started working with some national brands like John Lewis and Co-op.

This Rye Ruby Ale is brewed using unsold loaves of Chalk Hills Rye bread. It’s a complex loaf with flavours of caraway seed and spice. The resulting beer is rich and delicious, a real winter warmer. Perfect in front of a roaring fire.

We’ve just finished a round of crowdfunding which will help us start to partner with other bakeries all across the country. We realise the value of ‘local’ as well as our sustainability message so we hope that by building a network of ‘local’ bakers across the country we don’t lose sight of that.”

What a positive story behind this wonderful small business here in Surrey.
