Abundance of British Harvest Produce…As the early summer crops come to an end, we can enjoy the arrival of late summer crops with plums, apples, squash corn on the cob and tender early brassicas. If you enjoy foraging, then the hedgerows are heavily laden with blackberries this year. Blackberry & apple crumble is a firm favourite with us! Especially when accompanied with a large scoop of gelato or a generous dollop of cream! Let’s not forget the flowers….glorious bucketfuls of dazzling dahlias, armfuls of gorgeous hydrangeas. The flower girls love creating wedding flowers at this time of year. The wedding season continues and it is going to be wonderful working at Somersbury Barn, Ewhurst this month. If in need of a venue for a wedding we highly recommend this one. A quick solution to dinner is a dilemma given to many of us these days. One of our offerings are Fieldgoods frozen meals. The good news is they have been awarded a magnificent 12 gold Great Taste Awards from the Guild of Fine Foods. That really is confirmation of just how good we think they are! We have them available in store and on our webshop. This ‘post’ we share in a delightful Surrey find, go behind the scenes and chat to Simon Cornwell of Celebration Bakery of Cranleigh and announce our new Kingfisher Kids competition. Enjoy!

Celebration Bakery, CranleighThis month we celebrate harvest, so it seemed very fitting to have a conversation with Simon Cornwell of Celebration Cakes of Cranleigh. For many, there is nothing more nostalgic than walking into a bakers, the air filled with the delicious smell of freshly baked bread and a display of wonderful bakery treats including old favourites like, lardy cake, eccles cakes, jam doughnuts and danish pastries. Celebration Cakes of Cranleigh offers you this experience 6 days a week once you’ve stepped off Cranleigh high street, through their doors.
The Cornwell family baking bread in Cranleigh village for nearly 70 years. For Simon, who now runs the family business, like his father, his Uncle and his Grandfather before him, the bakers gene has been inherent within him, growing up with the familiarity of bakery smells and the air filled with flour. It felt the natural thing to do, to become a baker and work alongside his dad. “There is nothing better than to start your day making a fresh product from a raw material.”
Simon’s grandfather opened the bakery on the other side of the high street, but as the business developed they hopped across the road. ‘Cornwell’s Celebration Cakes’ was an opportunity for Tom, Simon’s dad, to showcase his sugar craft expertise offering a service in wedding cakes, birthday cakes or for any celebration!
“For some of our customers we have been on their family journeys, having made the wedding cake, christening cakes and many birthday cakes as the children have grown up.” What a wonderful way to share in their customers special moments.
Around this time, they opened another bakery in Dorking. Simon having committed to a career as a baker, managed the Dorking shop where the focus was pure and simple, on bread. This is when our wonderful relationship with Cornwell bakers began. Simon and Tom started supplying Kingfisher Farm shop nearly 30 years ago! As traditional bakers, their bread was in demand locally. Next, a small delivery round had been created.
A baker’s day is no ordinary one. The Cornwell bakers’ day starts at 7pm and bread is prepared, made and baked through the night, into the early morning hours, clocking off at 3am. As midnight strikes, the job of packing orders begins, so that deliveries can be made early to customers in neighbouring villages and towns. 5am front of house bakery team arrive to prepare the shop, filling the shelves with freshly baked bread. The shop door closes mid-afternoon and 4pm brings the day to a close.
Over the years the demands and the convenience of freshly baked goods for breakfast, lunch or a quick snack have grown significantly. Their tradition of baking seasonal lines, provides customers with excitement at the sight of the first hot cross bun, or mince pie. “The freshness and flavour of freshly baked goods, there’s nothing like it!”
Simon is now joined in the business by his eldest son, Curtis . He is the fourth generation! He too has inherited the bakers gene and has learnt under the watch full eye of his grandfather, Tom and father, Simon. He certainly makes a great watercress and cheese scone!
As a small artisan bakery they can fulfill requests of customers like ourselves. “Can you make watercess bread?” we ask. “No problem!” replies Simon! The beauty of being part of the small business community. Simon is not only nostalgic about bread, it’s also why he loves being part of the ebb and flow of Cranleigh, and having a true sense of belonging. Thank you, Simon.
