The Results are in……What a wonderful turnout we had for 2023, with 50 jars of marmalade. We were so impressed by the entries from the little Kingfishers in the under 14’s. It is lovely to receive enthusiasm from the next generation of marmalade makers! Thank you to everyone who entered this years marmalade competition. We very much appreciate your enthusiasm, time and effort. We look forward to seeing you with your jars of marmalade next year! We are able to donate £67 to the Phylis Tuckwell Foundation. We are kindly given permission to hold the Fanny’s Marmalade Competition by Fanny’s daughter, Nellie. Fanny of Fanny’s Farm Shop, sadly passed away in 2015, she was a great ambassador of marmalade. A big thank you to this years judges, Debbie Nicholas of Debbie’s preserves and Will Walton, private chef who spent time deliberating on the appearance, texture, taste and aroma. It was as much of a surprise to them, as it was to everyone else on the announcement that the ‘King of Kingfisher’, Barrie, won first prize for the Gentleman’s Seville marmalade!! Here are the results!

Nelly’s Farm…….Lionel, Bridget, Josh and Maria Nelly’s Farm turned 10 years old in 2022! It is incredible to think that Kingfisher have been selling Nelly’s Farm Scotch eggs for all that time. We began supplying Kingfisher right at the beginning of our Nelly’s Farm journey, after Lionel and Marion frequented Covent Garden Market, on early morning visits to buy fresh produce. You never know who you may bump into at such unsocial hours of the day!

We began producing scotch eggs for a few local shops and retailers. Our customers now spread across East and West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, and are predominantly farm shops, deli’s and café’s who pride themselves on local, high quality food and ingredients. The scotch egg, is without doubt, the businesses signature product. “We have been focused on making only the finest scotch eggs, with an ethos of maintaining the best animal welfare and minimising our impact on our surroundings.

The idea has continued to develop, and today, our food range has increased and our production now supports our livestock, land management and care”. The food business is operated by Josh and Maria, alongside Lionel and Bridget, the founders of Nelly’s Farm. Josh and Maria became involved in the kitchen aspect of the business in 2020. They played an integral role in developing new and exciting products. Later, in 2021, the couple took over the day-to-day running of Nelly’s Farm.
The couple work closely with Lionel and Bridget to continue what they began, to create foods that carry the same principles as their farm. Nelly’s Farm products only contain ingredients one may expect to find in one’s own kitchen larder. Free range pork is from West Sussex Farms. The pastry is made by the brilliant SODT Bakery in Petworth, and all the vegetables are from Munneries, a grocer in West Whittering, they have been working closely with for over 10 years.

The business has always been environmentally conscious. They use compostable and biodegradable packaging. Their deli customers receive their deliveries on trays, which are washed and returned each week, to reduce waste. Additionally, all of the food waste is composted or fed back to their animals. They use local suppliers to the farm, to reduce food miles and keep CO2 emissions to a minimum.

So, what does the future have in store for Nelly’s Farm? “We are very excited for what 2023 and the future holds for Nelly’s Farm. We want to continue our mission to raise awareness of the importance of animal welfare, whilst growing our business into new areas, and creating new relationships with similarly minded businesses and customers. We hope to continue our sustainability goals by making the switch to renewable energy over the coming years.”
