Local produce and British blooms…

It is a wonderful time of year for local and seasonal produce. The farm shop shelves are laden with locally grown lettuces, fresh tender vegetables and sweet berries and buckets of summer blooms fill the flower shop, bursting with colour and scent! Look out for our ‘LOCAL’ signs within the store, there are plenty of seasonal treats to be had!

Chalk Hills Bakery co owner Rosie, was inspired by the watercress tastings on Surrey Day in May, so much so, that there are two new watercress themed products in store. Sausages rolls with watercress pesto and Gingerbread watercress men! We love them and we hope you do to. They are perfect picnic snacks! There is a wealth of delicious picnic food that we have to offer, so we have highlighted some of our favourites for you.

Kingfisher at The Polesden Lacey Endurance GB event

Here at Kingfisher we are lucky to be able to provide flowers & plants galore for all sorts of occasions & events. In June, we were very privileged to be asked to sponsor Endurance GB, a competitive long distance riding event held countrywide and locally at Polesden Lacey. As ever we took up the challenge as you can see, we can certainly put on a show.

We had been asked to supply 12 planters & flowers for the podium and vet check area. Everything in the displays were full of British Flowers, very fitting as in the month of June is “British Flowers Week.”

All of this was a pleasant surprise for our Flower girl Jo, who along with her pony Fran, had entered the 20K class event before she knew Kingfisher Flowershop were involved. It seemed only fitting, with one of our Kingfisher family taking part, that we gave her some support. Our roving reporter, Netty, in our little blue electric van, wasn’t going to miss this one !!!

Endurance GB did us proud and so did Jo and Fran! They completed the 20K in 2.5hrs and all worth it for a rosette and extra carrots from the Farmshop for Fran. Thanks go out to Endurance GB for asking us to their event. There is a lot of work done behind the scenes at Kingfisher, but lovely to see that our team do some fun things in their spare time.

Plant based meals for kids and families......

Meet Wildly Tasty

Sometimes there are never enough hours in the day….when striving to eat well it is all to easy to grab a pastry or sandwich. Thankfully our freezer is stocked with ready to go healthy options for all the family, including Surrey based, ‘Wildly Tasty’ pots of vegan delicious goodness.

Louisa Mitchell, founder of this wonderful enterprise, took time to talk all things ‘Wildly Tasty’, as she is about to celebrate the business’s 1st birthday!

“After having two children under two, I was looking for nutritious meals to feed my children when I struggled to find the time to cook. With a background as a development chef, I decided to create a range of meals that were really flavoursome, full of wholesome all natural ingredients and batch cooked by hand, just like you would at home. I wanted to create a range of products that were really convenient for parents to create a quick kids dinner or speedy lunchbox, but that still gives the parent the flexibility of what side to feed to their children eg pasta, rice, potatoes.

I wanted to create a range where fresh flavours and nutrition are at the forefront and the meals would appeal to any age child, not just toddlers. In the last couple of months we launched the family size meals, as these were being requested so much by our customers!

The family size meals serve the whole family and come in a serving size of 4 people, again with a focus on convenience, as well as also being cooked from frozen, they are served in two separate trays so only two portions can be cooked at one time if preferred. I’m pleased to say we have been selling the family packs really well. Not only are they great for families but anyone looking for a healthy ready meal that’s low in salt and loaded with veggies!

All the meals are plant-based, packed full of veg and legumes for protein. Meals range from Veg-packed Pasta sauces to Yellow Thai curry, Creamy Dahl, Apricot Tagine, Mild jackfruit chilli, Lentil bolognese and vegan ‘meatballs’. Our meals are suitable for any age from 1 upwards.

Our customers are generally busy parents who want to feed their family healthy and tasty meals, but struggle to find the time to cook. Often those who are flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan. We know that our meals also provide a solution to office and emergency workers too looking for a speedy nutritious lunch!

Our signature product is our Lentil & Mushroom bolognese, it continues to be our best-seller, and is a comforting family favourite to both children and adults alike.

Sourcing sustainable ingredients is really important to us, we’ve worked hard to find the highest quality, ethically sourced produce, from our organic legumes through to our spices, coconut milk and British-grown oats.

Sustainability is really at the heart of the business, from the sourcing of our all natural plant-based ingredients through to our fully recyclable packaging. We print our marketing materials either on wild seeded paper or on recycled paper and we support local wildlife charity based in Leatherhead, Wildlife Aid. Our mission is to encourage a love of plant-based eating from a young age, to excite little taste buds with meals that are kind to their health and the planet.

We are planning on expanding our range of savoury and sweet bites, with a focus on lunchboxes and after school snacks. We will continue to remain focused on sustainability and ways we can work together with our local community in Surrey.

The Kingfisher farm shop is a very special place to us, as it’s the first shop our meals have been stocked in. Marion and the team have been incredibly warm and welcoming, and are hugely supportive of local businesses.”
